JULY 29 |
(GMT
+13) / NUKU'ALOFA |
|
|
|
The active volcanic island
of Tofua, where the mutiny on the Bounty is said to have taken
place is a short flight from Nuku'alofa by sea-plane. Everything
seems to be broadcasting correctly from GMT+13 to GMT-7 in
anticipation of the exhibition opening to public tomorrow,
so we decide to take off quite literally and visit the island. |
|
|
Larry, our pilot, just sneaks
the plane over the mountainous ridge surrounding the island
and then circles down to land on the large lake covering much
of the island's interior. The lake formed as a result of the
old cone's collapse many years ago, and it is from inside
this island doughnut that the new active crater is emerging. |
|
|
We trek up towards the lip
of the crater and watch clouds of sulfurous steam belched
skywards. Every few minutes the dead silence is shattered
by the crack of an explosion from below our feet |
