Diminished
7th v1.0,
Thomson &
Craighead. A generative music system for Art Transpennine 2003. Listen to a sample recording here (700K) |

Five tuned cowbells designed to create
the C minor diminished 7th chord lie at the centre of this generative
music system. By attaching these bells to clustering moving objects
such as small herds of dairy cattle or players of team sports (for example),
a potentially infinite variety of generative musical outcomes can be
created that respond directly to the location within which they are
installed. |
|
For Centuries, Austrian and Swiss farmers
have used the cowbell as a means to locate cattle left to graze the Alpine
slopes in the relative warmth of summer. By re-contextualising this technology
in the English Transpennine region, and by utilising chord structures
associated with Jazz music, we hope to focus on the potential for such
cowbell installations to make their salient contribution to the generative
music community. Please note that this generative music system is now available for hire through Thomson & Craighead's ongoing e-commerce venture http://www.dot-store.com Just visit the store and use the product finder to locate the dot-store Generative Music System. |
